Indian Navy Ranks– Indian Navy is a branch of Indian Armed Forces. The Indian president is the supreme commander of the Indian Navy.

A four-star admiral called The Chief of Naval staff commands the whole Indian Navy.

Indian Navy is originated from the East Indian Company’s Marine in 1612.

The role of the Indian navy is to participate in Naval warfare, defence deterrence, force projection, sealift. Indian Navy includes 67,252 personnel and 137 ships.  

Indian Navy offers ample opportunities for promotion. Candidates aspiring to join Indian Navy must be aware of the ranks and their insignia which helps them to identify the Indian Navy Ranks of a soldier.

Indian Navy Ranks for Commissioned Officers

Admiral of the Fleet or Fleet Admiral knew as “Admiral of Navy” or “Grand Admiral”, is an honorary five-star rank of the highest order. In many nations, also in Indian navy, the rank is reserved for wartime or ceremonial appointments. No officer of the Indian Navy has yet been assigned with this rank.

Insignia- Contain one thick and four thin gold braid stripes (loop on the topmost stripe).

The Admiral is known as The Chief of the Naval Staff (Admiral) & is the commander and the highest-ranking officer in the Indian Navy. Admiral in Indian Navy is a four-star rank. Admiral rank is equivalent to “General” in Indian Army & “Air Chief Marshal” in Indian Airforce.

The Pay band/ scale of a Vice Admiral is 90,000.

Insignia: Shoulder Board – The rank Insignia of Admiral is Four-star beneath crossed sword and baton, surmounted by Emblem of Indian.

Sleeves Insignia – Contain one thick and three thin gold braid stripes (loop on the topmost stripe).

3. Vice Admiral

Vice Admiral is a senior officer rank which is senior to a rear admiral and junior to an admiral. The Vice Chief of the Naval Staff is second in command of the Indian Navy and is a Three-star Officer. He is responsible for all the operations of naval related tasks. Vice Admiral rank is equivalent to “Lieutenant-general” in Indian Army & “Air Marshal” in Indian Airforce.

The Pay band/ scale of a Vice Admiral is 67,000 – 79,000.

4. Rear Admiral

Rear Admiral is the lowest of the “admiral” ranks, sometimes referred to as “flag officers” or “flag ranks”. It is a rank below vice admiral, and above a Commodore. In Indian Navy Rear Admiral is a senior and a two-star rank officer. Rear Admiral rank is equivalent to “Major general” in Indian army and “Air Vice Marshal” in Indian Airforce.

The Pay band of a Rear Admiral is 37400 – 67000 which lies in the pay band 4. The grade pay is 10,000 rupees.  A Rear Admiral in Indian Navy gets around 4 Lakh rupee’s salary per month.

5. Commodore

Traditionally, “commodore” is the title given to any officer who assigned to command more than one ship at a time. A commodore typically commands a squadron or flotilla of ships, as part of a larger task force commanded by an admiral. Commodore rank in Indian Navy is equivalent to “Brigadier” in Indian Army and “Air Commodore” in Indian Airforce. In Indian Navy Ranks Commodore is, superior to captain, but below a rear admiral.

The Pay band of Commodore is 37400 – 67000 which lies in the pay band 4. The grade pay is 8900 rupees and MSP are 6000 rupees per month.  A commodore in Indian Navy gets 3.5 Lakh rupees salary per month.

Insignia – A Commodore insignia has one thick gold braid strip with a gold ring above it on a black background.

6. Captain

Captain rank in Indian Navy Ranks is equivalent to “Colonel” in Indian Army and “Group Captain” in Indian Airforce. A navy officer who commands a ship is called by naval custom as “captain”. Captain rank is one rank senior to Commander and one rank junior to Commodore.

The pay band of a captain is 37400- 67000 rupees which lie in pay band 4. Captain of Indian navy gets 8700 rupees grade pay and 6000 rupees MSP. A Captain in Indian navy gets 2.5 lakh rupees per month.

Insignia – Captain insignia contain four gold braid stripes (loop in the top stripe) on a black background.

7. Commander

Commander is a term used for an officer commanding any armed force unit. Commander is one Rank senior to Lieutenant Commander. It is a common rank in both Navy and Airforce. This is equivalent to “Lieutenant Colonel” in Indian Army and “wing commander” in Airforce.

The Pay band of Commander is 37400 – 67000 which lies in the pay band 4. The grade pay is 8000 rupees and MSP are 6000 rupees per month.

Insignia- Commander insignia contains three medium gold braid stripes (loop on the top stripe).

8. Lieutenant Commander

Lieutenant Commander rank is superior to a lieutenant and subordinate to a commander. Lieutenant commander is a commanding officer of a small ship or installations. It is a commissioned officer rank in Indian Navy. Lieutenant Commander rank is equivalent rank to “Major” in Indian Army and “Squadron leader” in Indian Air force.

The Pay band of lieutenant is 15600 – 39100 which lies in the pay band 3. The grade pay is 6600 rupees which are 500 rupees more than that of a sub-lieutenant and MSP is 6000 rupees per month.

Insignia – Lieutenant Commander insignia consists of two medium gold braid stripes (loop on top stripe) with one thin stripe in between on a black background.

9. Lieutenant

It is a commissioned officer rank in Indian Navy. Lieutenant is one rank senior to sub-lieutenant. Lieutenant rank in Indian navy is equivalent to “Captain” rank in Indian Army and “Flight Lieutenant” in Indian Air force.

 The Pay band of lieutenant is 15600 – 39100 which lies in the pay band 3. The grade pay is 6100 rupees which are 700 rupees more than that of a sub-lieutenant and MSP is 6000 rupees per month.

10. Sub Lieutenant

Sub-lieutenant is the lowest commissioned officers rank in Indian Navy.  It is the first-rank given to the candidate who has successfully completed the prescribed training of the Indian Navy.

The pay band of a Sub-lieutenant officer is 15600-39100 which lies in pay band 3. The grade pay of a Sub-lieutenant officer is 5400/- or MSP of 6000/-.  If we include total allowances and pay, an officer working in Indian Navy gets a salary of around 65000 rupees per month.

Insignia – Sub-lieutenant insignia consists of one medium gold braid stripe with executive curl.

Indian Navy Ranks for Junior Commissioned Officers

1. Master Chief Petty Officer (First Class)

Master Chief Petty Officer First Class is the senior-most rank of junior commissioned officer in the Indian Navy. Although they are commissioned officers but play a role similar to that of the most senior non-commissioned officers.

Master Chief Petty Officer (1st class) rank is equivalent to “Subedar Major” in Indian Army & “Master Warrant Officer” in Indian Airforce.

2. Master Chief Petty Officer (Second Class)

 A Master Chief Petty Officer Second Class is an officer in the Indian Navy who is designated as a junior commissioned officer (JCO) distinguished from the commissioned ones and is a non-commissioned senior officer. Master Chief Petty Officer (2nd class) rank is equivalent to “Subedar” in Indian Army & “Warrant Officer” in Indian Airforce. An officer of Indian navy gets this rank after the promotion of chief petty officer rank.

3. Chief Petty Officer

A chief petty officer is a junior commissioned officer (JCO) rank in the Indian Navy. They are in between the commissioned and non-commissioned ranks. Responsibility of a Chief Petty Officer is to train junior officers and leading his division of sailors and petty officers.

Chief Petty Officer rank is equivalent to “Naib Subedar” in Indian Army & “Junior Warrant Officer” in Indian Airforce.

A Petty Officer in Indian Navy is a non- commissioned officer. A Petty Officer rank is equal to the Sub Inspector of police in the Indian Police service. A Petty officer is senior to Leading Rate and Subordinate to Chief Petty Officer.

Petty Officer rank is equivalent to “Havildar” in Indian Army & “Sergeant” in Indian Airforce. A Petty officer is responsible for the training and recruitment of new members in Indian Navy.

2. Leading Seaman

Leading seaman is a junior non- commissioned rank in Indian navy. A Leading Seaman is senior to Seaman and Subordinate to Petty officer.  Leading seaman rank is equivalent to “Lance Naik” in Indian Army & “Leading Aircraftsman” in Indian Airforce.

3. Seaman

An Ordinary Seaman is the lowest and non- commissioned rank in Indian navy. A Seaman is required to work on a ship for a specific amount of time. An ordinary Seaman has a variety of duties concerned with the operation and upkeep of deck department areas and equipment.
